Car Won't Start in the Cold? What to Check First (Michigan Guide)
Clicking, slow crank or nothing at all? How to tell a cold-weather dead battery from a bigger problem, and when you need a jump start or a tow.

Start with the sound the car makes
A Michigan cold snap is hard on batteries. AAA's Automotive Research Center reports that a battery loses about 35% of its strength at 32°F and about 60% at 0°F. Exact figures vary by battery and test, but the point holds: cold leaves less power available just as a cold engine asks for more.
Before you call anyone, turn the key or press the start button once and listen. That one attempt tells you most of what you need to know.
| What you notice | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid clicking | Battery too weak to turn the starter | Jump start |
| Slow, labored crank | Weak battery, made worse by cold | Jump start, then test the battery |
| One loud click | Weak battery, bad connection or starter | Try a jump. If nothing changes, plan on a tow |
| Normal crank, no start | Fuel, ignition or sensor problem | A jump will not help. Plan on a tow |
| No sound, dark dash | Fully dead battery or loose terminal | Check the terminals, then try a jump |
What to try before you call
Keep it simple, and stop if anything looks wrong.
- Turn everything off. Heater, lights, radio and phone chargers all draw from the battery you need for starting.
- Look at the battery, if you can reach it. Loose or heavily corroded terminals can stop a car from starting even when the battery has some charge left.
- Check the key fob. On a push-button car, a weak fob battery in the cold can look like a dead car. Your owner's manual shows where to hold the fob if the car does not detect it.
- Wait between attempts. Long cranking heats the starter and drains what charge is left. Try for a few seconds, then wait a minute.
Do not jump the battery if the case is cracked or leaking, you smell rotten eggs, or the battery looks frozen or swollen. Those are signs to stop and call for help.
Jump start, new battery or tow?
A jump start fits when the car clicks or cranks slowly. If it starts, let it run and drive it straight to a shop or parts store for a battery test. A battery that fails once in the cold often fails again the next cold morning.
A new battery makes sense when the same car needs repeat jumps or dies again within a day. Prime O Towing offers mobile 12V battery replacement in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor, with fitment and availability confirmed by phone.
A tow is the right call when the engine cranks normally but will not start, when a jump does not change anything, or when warning lights point to something bigger. See emergency towing. All-wheel-drive cars and EVs usually need a flatbed.
If you are stopped on the freeway
The advice above is for a driveway or parking lot, not a shoulder on I-94 or US-23. Jumping a car means standing at the front of it with open hoods, close to traffic.
If you stall on the freeway, turn on your hazard lights, stay away from traffic, and call for help. If you are stopped in a travel lane or anyone is hurt, call 911 first. Our highway towing page lists the stretches we cover and what to tell dispatch.
How to avoid the next no-start
- Test the battery before deep winter. Many parts stores will test it at no charge.
- Keep the terminals clean and tight.
- Take longer drives when you can. Lots of short trips may not fully recharge the battery.
- Keep a kit in the car. Our car emergency kit checklist covers what to carry in a Michigan winter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my car start fine in the afternoon but not in the morning?
Overnight is usually when the battery and the engine oil are at their coldest. A weak battery may have just enough power once the day warms up, then fail again the next cold morning. It is worth getting it tested.
How long should I drive after a jump start?
There is no exact number, but a short trip around the block is rarely enough. Drive directly to a place that can test the battery rather than shutting the car off somewhere you could get stuck again.
Will a jump start work on a hybrid or EV?
Many hybrids and EVs have a separate 12V battery that can go flat, and some can be jumped by following the steps in the owner's manual. Tell us the make and model when you call, because the procedure varies.
How much does a jump start cost?
Prime O Towing jump starts start at $65. Call for a quote for your location before we dispatch.
