Before you call

What to do when you break down.

  1. 1. Get as far right as you can

    If the car still moves, take the next exit or the widest shoulder you can reach. Turn on your hazard lights.

  2. 2. Stay away from traffic

    If you cannot get out on the side away from traffic, stay inside with your seat belt on. Do not stand behind the car, and do not try to push it.

  3. 3. In a travel lane or hurt? Call 911

    A car stopped in live traffic is an emergency, and so is anyone who is hurt. Call 911 first, then call us.

  4. 4. Find your location

    Note the highway, your direction of travel and the nearest exit or mile marker. Your phone map can show you where you are.
